A cut fiber optic cable caused a state wide outage in the Nevada DMV database in Carson City on Tuesday. The just over one day interruption left workers unable to do the necessary national record check required to issue a state driver's license. However, the outage did not effect car registration procedures, and citizens wishing to take a drivers test could also do so but they would have to wait to have a license issued or reinstated.
In a message on their website the department stated that the service interruption, which began on 4:10 PM Monday afternoon, was caused in California and occurred due to a Verizon owned fiber optic cable being completely cut. This loss of service caused DMV offices throughout Nevada to be unable to process driver's license issuing, renewals, learner's permits, identification cards, or any document needing a national records check.
The system was finally brought back on line Tuesday at exactly 4:28PM. A spokesman for the DMV, David Fierro said the issue was fully repaired, meaning that the branches should be able to resume normal operations by Wednesday. However it might be recommended to call ahead before making the trip in the next day or two.
