On Monday, February 24th, the Las Vegas police department announced that they will no longer be responding to accidents when no one is injured. This makes many people feel uneasy, especially because most people find comfort in having police come to the accident to report it and to help with the exchanging of information. The traffic captain of the Las Vegas Police Department claimed that more than half of his officers' time is spent on dealing with accidents that do not have any injuries. Instead, the traffic captain claims that his men need to start focusing on enforcing traffic laws to prevent street fatalities.
The leaders of our country are informing us that this is solely an administrative decision and has nothing to do with the financial standing of the Las Vegas Police Department. They also inform us that this is a pretty easy fix; stating that all they need to do is take the time and effort to find and train new officers. It has come to light that this police department has been enforcing this new procedure for the last two years.
It is hard to believe that this procedure has not been stopped. The Las Vegas Police Department believes that they will not be the last department to enforce this procedure; and this is proven by LA and Tucson police departments that do not respond to damage-only accidents. This new procedure, that is slowly becoming more and more popular, could lead to a more difficult time for those that are actually involved in the accident. Without a police officer there to hand out tickets and help facilitate the matter, deciding whose fault it was can become extremely difficult. Unfortunately, this administrative decision is up to each department separately so it could become more common than us, the drivers, hope for.
